MANAGEMENT: CTICC Joins GSB Event Management

Recent Western Cape Business News

The Postgraduate Diploma in Management focusing on Event Management, which is run through Customised Academic Learning (CAL) at the UCT Graduate School of Business, has received a major boost with four new clients signing up for 2010 – the Cape Town International Convention Centre (CTICC), Westin Grand Hotel, Winchester Mansions Hotel and event technology company AV Alliance, will all send staff on the customised programme this year.

The Postgraduate Diploma focusing on Event Management is a first-of-its-kind programme designed to significantly improve the strategic management capacity of events sector professionals from all corners of South Africa, said Director of CAL, Linda Buckley.

We hope to develop a cadre of middle and senior managers that are able to deal with the complexities and uncertainties faced by the sector and who can move beyond operational thinking to become more strategic in their management approach,” said Buckley.

This will no doubt improve the competitiveness of South Africa’s events sector as a whole,” she said.

Academic Co-ordinator of the programme, Beverly Shrand, said the course was designed specifically to “seamlessly integrate operations and strategic management functions”.

The failure to implement successfully is generally caused by problems at the interface between operations management and strategic management,” said Shrand. “This programme is geared towards developing the management capacity needed to effectively integrate these two areas,” she added.

The launch of the 2010 programme with these new clients follows a successful pilot run in 2007 where it became clear from participating individuals that a programme of this nature was invaluable to the events industry – a sector not traditionally catered for at business schools.

CEO of the CTICC, Rashid Toefy, said the Postgraduate Diploma would feed into and support the CTICC’s vision to ultimately become “the number one long-haul events destination in the world”.
