SHIPPING: Sturrock Spreading Its Services
Recent Western Cape Business News
WHILE many South African companies have ventured beyond the countries borders in an attempt to harness both new markets and the potential of Africa, few have been as successful as leading ship’s agency and clearing and forwarding company Sturrock Shipping, says MD Andrew Sturrock.
The company was founded in 1969 to provide a full supply-chain service for the handling of sea transport and the import and export of goods into and out of South Africa. Today it is represented in Kenya, Tanzania, Mozambique, Madagascar, Angola and Sudan and is in the process of establishing a presence in Ghana.
In 2009 the company celebrated its 40th anniversary with the unveiling of a new corporate identity, and a ‘vision’ to be globally recognised as the leading ship’s agency, clearing and forwarding and logistics company in sub-Saharan Africa.
Sturrock ascribes the company’s success to an intense focus on both staff and customers: “We fundamentally recognise the importance of empowering our staff as the means of ensuring that we consistently exceed customer expectations and outperform the giants in the industry,” he says.
The company was also ahead of the curve with regard to black economic empowerment, having concluded a major empowerment deal with the Calulo Group in 2007.
“Sturrock Shipping enjoys extensive local, regional and international relationships. Customers therefore have access not only to a global network, but also to the solid relationships the company enjoys with local authorities and suppliers.”
“We believe that Africa is our future and we are committed to providing a service on the continent that is unrivalled in terms of both scope and quality,” says Sturrock.
