POWER SUPPLY: Selling Darling's Green Electricity

Recent Western Cape Business News

The City of Cape Town will today announce its plans to start selling the green electricity produced at the Darling Wind Farm on the West Coast.

The electricity generated at the Darling Wind Farm will soon be sold to all interested Capetonians through Green Electricity Certificates, which will enable consumers to participate in the practical use of green electricity, without being directly connected by a power line to the renewable energy source.

The Darling Wind Farm is a partnership between the Danish Government Development Agency Danida, the Central Energy Fund, the Development Bank of South Africa, the private Darling Independent Power Producer and the City of Cape Town.

Clive Justus, Mayoral Committee Member for Utility Services, said: “This is an exciting first step for Cape Town to reach our stated target to source 10% of our overall energy requirements from sustainable sources by 2020. Buying Green Electricity Certificates will give Capetonians the opportunity to demonstrate that they are consuming electricity from a sustainable source.”
