MARKETING: Cape Town Supports Design Indaba

The City pro-actively supports projects like the Indaba which promote and foster local talent and enterprise. In this regard, the City has contributed R650 000 to the Design Indaba, as well as R1.8 million to the Cape Town entrepreneurship competition.
The Indaba is a platform for Western Cape-based SMMEs to showcase their innovative, locally designed and produced goods in the creative industries. Last year, the Indaba attracted 2146 delegates and 249 local and international journalists. It contributed over R183 million to the South African GDP. Total attendance was estimated at 29 000 and this year expectations are even higher, with a line-up of speakers that include leading local and international personalities.
“The calibre of the speakers at this year’s event affirms the fact that the Design Indaba is a key event, contributing to Cape Town’s positioning as a premier event destination,” said the City’s Director: Economic and Human Development, Thembinkosi Siganda.
“Events such as this help to position Cape Town as a global knowledge and innovation hub by strengthening key sectors such as the creative and tourism industries,” said the City’s Executive Director: for Economic, Social Development and Tourism, Mansoor Mohamed.
The Design Indaba seeks to attract the brightest talents, celebrating the creative sectors of graphic design, advertising, film, music, fashion design, industrial design, architecture, craft, visual art, new media, publishing, broadcasting and the performing arts sector. The organisers describe the event as having grown into a “multi-tiered experience that incorporates an extensive range of elements such as events, publications, education, training, business and development.
