MATERIALS HANDLING: Hyster-A-Day For Fruit Farmers
Recent Western Cape Business News
BARLOWORLD Handling is making inroads among fruit producers in the Western Cape with its short term rental solution built around Hyster counterbalanced lift trucks. From six machines placed at one fruit grower in 2008, the company will this season roll out a large number of short term rental units in the Koue Bokkeveld/Ceres area alone.
“Hyster has always been strong among South African fruit producers and packing houses, and we will this season further cement the brand in all the Western Cape fruit producing areas with our short term rental solution,” says Dean Lategan, Barloworld Handling regional sales manager.
Barloworld Handling supplies electric, diesel and LPG Hyster counterbalanced lift trucks, mostly in the 2.0 to 2.5 ton range, to producers and packing houses needing additional assistance during the fruit picking season.
“During 2008 we had the opportunity to supply Hyster units on short term rental to leading fruit farm De Keur in the Koue Bokkeveld. Their experience of the reliability of these machines and the service support has been a powerful endorsement, resulting in the unprecedented demand we are now experiencing,” says Lategan.
When the packing line starts to run, fruit producers require maximum uptime. Lategan says many of the short term rental Hyster lift trucks destined for the fruit areas are only two to three years old, with most coming from Barloworld Handling’s long term rental fleet. This means the machines have been maintained rigorously, using trained technicians and genuine parts, to give customers a well looked after, competitive product.
In addition to the built-in quality of Hyster lift trucks, Barloworld Handling provides customers with the best service support, which includes the fastest average response time in the industry, 24 hours per day, 7 days per week, 365 days per year, says Lategan. “Dedicated Barloworld Handling field technicians service the fruit growing areas, and more will now be deployed to ensure the highest levels of support on seasonal machines.”
Another key element in the Barloworld Handling service solution is its modern, centralised call centre that is regarded as a benchmark in the industry.
“Hyster lift truck technology also delivers substantial operational cost savings. The Fortens LPG and diesel machines, for example, feature an engine management system that ensures keen fuel consumption, while a general refinement of the cooling, electrics, hydraulics and power train reduces downtime,” Lategan says.
With fruit exporters required to meet increasingly strict quality management standards and international regulations governing food safety, Barloworld Handling is experiencing growing demand for its electric counterbalanced lift trucks. Manufactured in Europe, Hyster’s LPG forklift technology complies with the latest health, safety and emission standards without compromising performance – another important consideration for fruit growers.
