EVENTS: GSB Enhances Management Programme

Recent Western Cape Business News

Event Management offered by the UCT Graduate School of Business (GSB), geared to advancing management capability within the events industry, has been further fine-tuned after a successful pilot run and will be offered for the second time in 2010.

The Postgraduate Diploma which is designed and run by the Corporate Learning division at the UCT GSB, is an accredited professional qualification (NQF 7, 120 credits) with an Event Management focus which equips practitioners, their teams and their organisations to better respond to the management and complexities of Event Management in a challenging emergent economy like South Africa.

Speaking at a recent information session for industry professionals at the GSB, Linda Buckley, Director of Corporate Learning, said that the course is one which has delivered exceptional value to students since its inception in 2007.

We have heard from those who have graduated from our pilot run that this programme can have a life-changing impact, personally and professionally – this is something we are very proud of. We have taken their valuable feedback and used it to enhance the offering, and we will also have some of these graduates back to offer lectures in 2010.”

Buckley said that the Postgraduate Diploma is designed to draw on diversity and has been designed for managers within the conferencing and event sectors and related areas who have work/or management experience.

The programme adopts a systems thinking and action learning approach to change and improvement, and is highly relevant for those seeking to increase their management practice competence and confidence in contexts of diversity, complexity and uncertainty,” said Buckley.

Also speaking at the information session was Rashid Toefy, CEO of the Cape Town International Convention Centre (CTICC), who fully endorsed the programme as a big stepping stone to new levels of performance.

Toefy, a graduate of the UCT GSB’s Executive MBA (EMBA), said that the Postgraduate Diploma embodies the GSB’s approach to management development, which he too benefitted from since completing his EMBA.

The events industry is one in which today you live or die by your business and management skills. The skills acquired through the GSB EMBA has been invaluable and no doubt contributed to me getting the leadership position that I have at the CTICC.”
