EMPOWERMENT: Crane Operator Gets Heavyweight BEE Rating

Recent Western Cape Business News

One of Cape Town's leading mobile crane operators, Target Cranes, has been awarded a substantial level 3 contributor to BEE rating, with a procurement recognition level of 110%, as confirmed by BEE verification agency, Sera.

Founded in 1994, Target Cranes is one of the largest operators in South Africa with a fleet of over 70 modern, well-serviced mobile cranes with lifting capacities from 8 tons to 600 tons, distributed nationally and within the SADC region. The company is also the first large mobile crane operator to achieve such a high BEE rating.

The organization’s rating was scored on elements of ownership, management control, employment equity, skills development, preferential procurement, enterprise development and socio-economic development.

Matt Jack, director, Target Cranes comments: “We have worked hard to reach this level and we see the achievement as a significant milestone in terms of the company’s commitment to South Africa’s future.”  He explains how the BEE rating was achieved through several initiatives: “We committed to broad based black empowerment through Sphere Holdings, which has a 32.5% direct investment in Target Cranes.”

Jack further explains that the company has a strong and dedicated enterprise development and corporate social investment program in place and through its philosophy of being an investor in people, has ensured a committed and motivated workforce.  Target Crane’s initiatives include contributions to local communities, orphanages, staff family tuition initiatives and training centres.”

The basis of Target’s success has been the focus placed on our people, the development of their skills and the skills base in South Africa generally,” says Jack.

We have invested in our business capabilities - in building our lifting capacity and in our people and we are now able to offer the best expertise in South Africa - ensuring top effectiveness and reliability.”

Our industry leading empowerment credentials are in line with our track record of success as demonstrated through our blue chip client base including long term contracts with the likes of PetroSA and Chevron.”

We are extremely proud of our recent BEE rating and will continue to strive to maintain and ultimately improve our levels in years to come, and we are committed to contributing to the rejuvenation of the South African economy from the grassroots up.  Our commitment to investing in our people remains paramount and we realize the need for continued and optimized training and development going forward,” concludes Jack.
