MARINE: Pam Flourishes on Technology

Recent Western Cape Business News

ALTHOUGH it is a relatively new technology in industry the trade-marked Flow-Ice system owned locally by Milnerton-based Pam Refrigeration has had a runaway success in especially the fishing industry, locally and with exports.

Pam’s managing director Evert Potgieter says the reason is simple: the advantage is that Flow-Ice has a very high heat transfer rate. It can therefore cool fish extremely fast, five times quicker than other ice products, Potgieter claims. Flow-Ice also requires the lowest power consumption, compared to any other ice.

Based mainly on the success of Flow-Ice, Pam Refrigeration’s business too has grown from strength to strength and it recently moved to new, 1 000 sq m premises in Racing Park, Milnerton.

Representing an investment of R4 million, the manufacturing facility also offers industrial refrigeration systems, RSW and flake and plate ice systems. The factory is fully equipped to provide back-up to all of these systems. In addition it also provides design, engineering service and repair facilities.

Potgieter says most of the company’s products have found their way into the fishing industry ( horse mackerel, hake and pilchard fishing vessels and fish process factories) but increasingly other sectors too will now be targeted.

It is for this reason that Pam will make available to the local market the larger Canadian Ice-Gen flow-ice machines for use in the mining sector.

Pam will represent it throughout Africa and will initially import these heat exchangers and then start manufacturing them itself, according to Potgieter.

Other areas to be exploited by Pam’s Flow-Ice expertise are the food and agricultural sectors, such as the wine, dairy and meat segments, for example.

Potgieter says there is a keen demand for Pam’s thermal energy storage plant as the need for demand side management of electrical usage grows and the need increases to shift consumption from peak to non-peak electrical consumption periods.

The company has been doubling its turnover every year for the past five years, according to Potgieter.

With Potgieter’s new plans in hand it seems Pam will continue on its successful growth story.
